The Department of English was established in 1935, being coterminous with the foundation of the erstwhile Gurucharan College. Following the institution’s transition into a State University, the department continues to build on its long-standing academic tradition while adapting to the broader responsibilities of a university. The department currently offers programmes in English at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels: BA (FYIMP), MA, and Ph.D. Over the years, the department has been associated with distinguished faculty and has produced students who have achieved acclaim in a variety of fields. The department has organised national and international seminar/conferences, and workshops, in addition to its Annual Lecture programme, thereby contributing to academic exchange and scholarly dialogue. Since 2012, the department has been publishing Literaria, ISSN: 2278-2710, its annual peer-reviewed journal, and has also published books in the field of English studies.
